Saramago novel6/23/2023 ![]() So the above described celebration just won’t do. Well, this beloved novelist was not Ghanaian. I donate the amount of …Ghanaian cedis to his wife Pilar”. So if he has died and indeed a year has since passed, then I cannot help but come and mark this afenhyia with his family. He was, and remains, one of my favorite authors. Since then, I’ve been an avid reader of his works. I promptly run out, bought and read Blindness. “I first heard of José Saramago when he won the Nobel Prize in 1998. These announcements will elaborate on the nature of the donor’s relationship to Saramago or his immediate family. There would be donations to his wife Pilar, publicly announced so we know who gave the most money. The church would be Methodist, so I could sing my heart out. Frankly, some people will look their best on the day. We would wear styled outfits sown from black and white materials. ![]() We would go to church, visit his grave or burial site, and then gather at a public hall that can accommodate the expected huge crowd. ![]() In Ghana, we just don’t let the dead rest, we continually mark their death until we pass on! If he was Ghanaian, we would hold a one-year “celebration” of his life and passing, called afenhyia, to mark the day. José Saramago, the Portuguese writer and Nobel Laureate, passed away one year ago this week. ![]() How to train your dragon book6/23/2023 ![]() There are plenty of revelations in the book to delight and surprise loyal readers. The pace is relentless and plot twists and turns come thick and fast in this exhilarating tale. From the beginning, we are thrown into the heart of the action, as the indomitable Dragon Furious seeks to destroy Hiccup before he can be crowned king. How to Fight a Dragon's Fury is the 12th and final instalment of the popular How to Train Your Dragon series, which has seen young Hiccup develop from an awkward pre-teen into a confident young man. ![]() Suffice to say, things aren't going well for Hiccup and they can only get worse. He also has two poisonous fangs embedded in his arm the ticking teeth of a Vampire Spydragon which serve as a tracking device for the vicious beast, who is closing in as we speak. ![]() ![]() What is more, Hiccup has no memory no idea who he is and why he is so important. Unfortunately, Hiccup is lying unconscious on a beach at Hero's End, lost and alone with no boat. If the humans win, they will unlock the secret of the dragon jewel, with the potential to destroy all of the dragons. If the dragons win, the human race will be annihilated. On the Doomsday of Yule, the battle will end and only one side can be victorious. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's thrilling and tense at parts, and achingly sad at others. For years, this story haunted me well after I read it. ![]() My personal favorite, however, will always be "Past Sunset", a mournful and melancholy tale about a small town in France where one never opens their shutters after dark. Even the first story, the namesake of the anthology, mixes modernity with ancient superstition in a quick-witted, tongue-in-cheek story of revenge. She also has a keen sense of humor that shines in her stories. Sometimes you can see the twist coming, sometimes not, but every time is a delight. She is an absolute master of the short story, with a twist at the ending of most - if not all - that never feels forced or smug. Vivian Vande Velde shines as much to me now as an adult as she did when I was in elementary school. What if it didn't live up to my childhood memories? What if it was more goofy than spooky? ![]() by Vivian Vande Velde was one of my favorite books growing up, and I half-hesitated before picking it up again. ![]() David mccullough the great bridge review6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() In the years around 1870, the concept of building a great bridge to span the East River between the cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn required a vision and determination comparable to that which went into the building of the pyramids. It is the enthralling story of one of the greatest events during the Age of Optimism - a period when Americans were convinced that all great things were possible. This monumental audiobook which presents extended unabridged passages from the book brings back a heroic vision of the America we once had. FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMSįirst published in 1972, The Great Bridge is the classic account of one of the greatest engineering feats of all time - the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. ![]() The ministry of utmost happiness story6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Roy is a tremendously talented writer and her language throughout the novel is simply beautiful. This also happens to be one of several subplots in the novel, all of which depict individual lives within the context of a broader socio-cultural milieu. These chapters reminded me a bit of Martial Law novels from the Philippines, and I can only imagine how much more impactful they would have been on me if I were more familiar with India’s history. There are parts where freedom fighters are imprisoned by a corrupt government and must negotiate their way back to freedom, and I found these chapters particularly strong. In many ways, Ministry of Utmost Happiness feels like an important novel - it spans multiple generations and touches on some significant points of India’s past. ![]() I absolutely adored her earlier novel The God of Small Thingswhen I read it for university years ago, and I was looking forward to reading the story that compelled her return to fiction after twenty years. It seems almost blasphemous to admit I didn’t like Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. ![]() Emily a duncan books6/22/2023 ![]() Violence-spells are cast by literal bloodshed-and provocative questions (What are the gods?
